Overall Purpose of Job

GVA has a market leading business rates team, made up of over 50 professional staff managing close to £2.5 billion in annual business rate liabilities, covering a wide variety of commercial assets. The role would predominately but not exclusively concentrate on assets around London and the South East. The initial focus would be central London.

The fundamentals of the tax are based around the rental market. For the current 2017 list, the point of valuation is 1st April 2015. Any open market transactions, lease renewals and rent reviews agreed around this valuation date represent key evidence in establishing the appropriate level of rent (Rateable Value (RV)).

The process for business rates appeals in England has changed with the introduction from the 1st April 2017 of the Check Challenge Appeal system (CCA). This represents a major departure from the previous process as the onus of proof now rests on ratepayers and their agents to provide a full evidential case to the Valuation Office Agency before they will consider any form of review.

As a result we now need to take a more data-driven and analytical approach to our business development and our submission of data. We are therefore seeking an analyst to help us identify and prioritise opportunities to take through the appeals process.

The role will sit within the Business Rates team and involve collating and analysing datasets for properties across a variety of commercial real estate sectors. This will require close liaison with GVA’s rating professionals, based across the UK’s major cities.

This is a new role, and the successful candidate will be responsible for developing the process and deriving value for the business. It will provide an excellent opportunity for a candidate with strong analytical skills and commercial acumen to add value and to shape and develop the role.

Our culture is highly professional.  We are looking to recruit an individual who enjoys responding to challenges, is excited by meeting tough targets and enjoys both data analysis and working closely with colleagues.

Main Duties, Responsibilities & Accountabilities

We require an enthusiastic and focused individual to deliver a new service for our Business Rates team. The role will involve:

  • Sourcing and collating information across a number of internal and subscription data sources
  • Providing analysis from these data sources to prioritise opportunities and ensure that the correct data is submitted in a timely manner
  • Liaising with rating professionals and providing the information and advice they need to target opportunities
  • Communicating the results to senior management

The above list summarises the main responsibilities to be carried out but is not exhaustive and the candidate may be asked to undertake additional activities.

Standard working hours are 9am to 5:30pm with 1 hour for lunch, although the candidate may be required to work outside of these hours in order to meet business requirements.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Experience

The candidate should be educated to degree level and should have strong analytical skills and good business acumen.

An interest in, and knowledge of the commercial property sector would be a significant advantage.

This role will require someone who is innovative, confident, and adaptable to work on a wide variety of different tasks presented to them. The successful candidate should possess:

  • strong analytical and numerical skills
  • comfortable working with large datasets
