GVA’s Regeneration and Spatial Planning team is a small but highly influential advisory business within the wider Planning, Development and Regeneration business unit.  We are engaged at the cutting edge of the industry and employed by clients to provide insightful, innovative and forward looking advice that establishes solutions to unlock complex regeneration. We work at the interface between planning, design and development consultancy and have established partnerships with leading transport, environmental, urban design and architect businesses.  Robust and evidence-based, our work provides the platform for the development of policy and strategy, the approach to delivery, the justification of investment decisions and the understanding of the benefits and impacts of intervention for a range of public and private sector clients.   Our current work places us at the heart of a range of high profile, nationally significant projects and debates, addressing key issues such as estate renewal, workspace delivery, the future of town centres and infrastructure-led growth. Working across housing, economic, infrastructure and spatial domains and at a variety of scales we advise on some of the UK’s largest schemes, providing a strategic advisory role at the highest level.  Our clients include Crossrail, Crossrail 2, the GLA, local authorities in and outside of London, Development Corporations, LEPs and private developers. 

The role

GVA is seeking an Associate to play a leading role in the Regeneration and Spatial Planning team.  The role will be client facing and require the management and delivery of a range of commissions. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the leadership of the team as well as make a key contribution to the wider Planning, Development and Regeneration business.  This will include:

Business promotion through active participation in industry events and networks
Tender response leadership and co-ordination
Client point of contact Project leadership, ensuring delivery of high quality outputs Winning support and building agreement among stakeholders
Thought leadership, service development, enhancing and expanding the client offer Contributing to the wider growth and development of PDR and GVA 

 Primarily focussed on London and the South East our expertise is increasingly gaining national recognition, enabling us to work across the country with colleagues from our regional offices.

Characteristics & Knowledge

We expect the successful candidate to have a minimum of 8 years post qualification experience in a consultancy environment or closely related professional field.  They should be able to demonstrate in depth technical expertise which they are able to translate into strategic advice for a range clients. They will be required to demonstrate a track record in advising on complex regeneration issues and demonstrate an understanding of the wide ranging factors that influence growth and regeneration.  They should be aware of, and have been engaged in addressing, the major issues facing London and the South East in particular, including the strengthening relationship between development and infrastructure provision, the changing nature of the economy and the impacts this has on commercial property needs across office, industrial, retail and workspace sectors.

They should have an excellent practical knowledge of the legislative, organisational and decision making structures that shape and influence regeneration, planning policy and development.  Ideally they will also demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the commercial considerations of development delivery, including financing and strategic viability.

Technical Skills

The candidate will be able to collate, analyse and interpret a range of socio-economic, demographic and property datasets to provide a robust basis for client advice.  They will be experienced in using ONS, BRES, Census, Land Registry and Commercial Property (for example EGi or Costar Focus)  datasets and, ideally, also familiar with economic and demographic forecasting products from businesses such as Experian. They should demonstrate an excellent understanding of the relevance and purpose of using a wide range of qualitative datasources and information to understand places, identify issues and recommend solutions. They should have a good working knowledge of the strategic planning system and the approaches to evidence base development to support both Local Plan development and major planning applications.

Business Skills

The candidate will have the ability to work directly with clients and manage day to day relationships on a project specific basis.  They will understand the consultancy environment and be able to contribute to business development initiatives and competitive tendering. They must have strong project management, personal organisational, presentation and inter-personal skills.  They should be motivated to help grow the business and themselves, using their skills to expand the team’s offer, seek new opportunities and secure new clients.
